Mourning for Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Voss

 |  EI-Nachrichten

The members of the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology mourn the loss of their former colleague, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Voss, who has passed away at the age of 81.
Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Voss was appointed to the department of Electrical Power Supply at the then still young Paderborn University in 1984. His services to the university as Dean of Faculty 14 for more than 10 years were many and varied. Above all, however, he was a researcher who was enthusiastic about a wide variety of scientific issues that went far beyond the boundaries of his own subject area. His original field of research was the control of the electrical supply system. He recognised early on the importance of load-dependent electricity prices and their impact on the energy supply system (now known as demand side management) as well as the growing importance of renewable energies. Solar energy and wind energy, especially in interaction with the energy supply system, were the focus of his research work in the Department of Electrical Energy Supply. As he recognised that many other factors also intervene in the energy system, the name of the department was extended to include "Sustainable Energy Concepts".
Prof. Voss was a committed university lecturer for whom challenging and entertaining teaching was a matter close to his heart. This became clear time and again in the students' event reviews. "The best entertainer in the faculty" was written there. Prof Voss always attached great importance to correct formulations, but also to a clear presentation style. Needless to say, his lectures were popular with students. He supervised the interdisciplinary pilot scheme for the promotion of women in engineering for many years. Prof Voss always had a sympathetic ear for his colleagues in all situations.
We mourn the loss of a highly esteemed colleague, both professionally and personally, who will be greatly missed.
