Prospective students

You are not yet enrolled at Paderborn University, but are interested in computer science and electrical engineering? Did you know that these fields can be combined to form a degree program that you can study here with us? If that sounds exciting to you, the Computer Engineering degree program could be the perfect fit for you!

Curious? You can find all the information you need about enrollment and the course of study on the following pages:

Computer Engineering Bachelor

Computer Engineering Master

Are you already enrolled in the Computer Engineering program? Then you will find all the important information about your program in a concise overview below.

Have you ever read through your Examination regulations? They serve as a set of formal study requirements for your degree program and are legally binding. In particular, they provide answers to the following questions:

  • Which courses are required for me?
  • What formalities are relevant for my final module and thesis?

Are you interested in specific modules and looking for their descriptions so that you can better prepare yourself? The Module handbook, which is also a legal part of the examination regulations, can answer the following questions about your courses, among others:

  • What topics will be covered in this course?
  • What prior knowledge is required, and what is the expected workload?
  • What form does the exam take and how many ECTS credits are awarded for it?

You can view your examination regulations and module handbooks. Please make sure that you select the most recent module handbook for your examination regulations.

Among other things, the examination board is responsible for ensuring compliance with the examination regulations and adherence to the procedural rules adopted for the conduct of examinations.

It is also responsible for recognising study and examination achievements.

If, for example, you have already studied another subject or would generally like to have achievements recognised, it is best to contact the Computer Engineering Examination Board.

Would you like to expand your technical, linguistic, and cultural knowledge? Then a semester abroad is just the thing for you! As part of your computer engineering studies, you can usually choose between electrical engineering and computer science programs.

Are you interested and want to learn more about the requirements and opportunities for financial support, language acquisition, and the right people to contact?

Then find answers to all your questions about studying abroad here, take a look at our partner universities, and expand your skills. Further information about computer science semesters abroad specifically on this page.

Information on changing your examination regulation

The Computer Engineering program was reaccredited on October 1st, 2024, for both the bachelor's and master's degrees. Accordingly, there are new versions of the examination regulations, CEBA v4 and CEMA v5, each of which contains changes from their predecessor versions. If you are interested in switching to the new version of the examination regulations, you can obtain information at any time from the Electrical Engineering Student Advisory Service

If you have any questions about the transitional arrangements or the transfer of credits when changing programs, this document may also be helpful.

As with all other degree programs, there are various differences and special features to consider in the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Computer Engineering. Keeping track of these can help you successfully complete your studies! It is therefore worthwhile to always have the following information at hand.

Bachelor Computer Engineering

Although this study plan is not mandatory, it can serve as a valuable guide. While it generally makes sense to take the courses in the order specified, what happens if things don't go according to plan?

In this case in particular, it can be helpful to always have an overview chart for all required courses at hand. And if you keep this plan in mind and equip yourself with the knowledge from your module handbook, you will be well prepared for every semester!

Are you planning to start your bachelor's thesis soon, but don't know which subject area or topic would be suitable for you? Then this overview can help you find a possible topic for your thesis. It will also allow you to learn more about the individual subject areas on the respective pages and keep up to date with the latest news. The following list will help you get to know the leading figures and subject areas in computer science better.

Master Computer Engineering

In the Master's program in Computer Engineering, you are not bound by the structure of the study plan, but it can still serve as a good guide for your studies. However, you will not only have to deal with the elective modules, but also with which specializations you would like to pursue in your studies. The subject area pages and the current module handbook can help you with this.

As you know, you have to choose specialization areas in the master's program in Computer Engineering. Have you not yet decided on a focus area, or are you having trouble deciding? You can choose between the following specialization areas:

  • Embedded systems
  • Nano-/Microelectronics
  • Computer Systems
  • Communication and networks
  • Signal, image, and speech processing
  • Control and automation technology

You can view the events taking place in the respective specialization areas in the current semester directly in PAUL and register within the registration period. There you will also find all other relevant information, including who the course instructor is, whether the course is held in German or English, and at what times it takes place.

Are you wondering which project you could work on, or would you like to write a thesis soon? On this overview page of the various subject areas, you can see which electrical engineering projects are currently advertised and which topics are currently available for your master's thesis. If you are interested in a project or thesis in the field of computer science, it is worth taking a look at the current professorships and subject areas in computer science.
