In the 28th episode of the Electrical Engineering podcast ‘Current Affairs’, Prof. Dr Katrin Temmen talks to Julia Kirschbaum about her career and the Department of Engineering Education.
Prof. Dr Katrin Temmen knew even whilst at school that she wanted to study Electrical Engineering. During her degree, she worked as a research assistant in the field of high-voltage engineering and wrote her dissertation there. It was only on the recommendation of her boss at the time that Ms Temmen embarked on her PhD. “I lacked a role model; they were all men,” she noted. During this time, she led a basic practical session and discovered her fascination for teaching and, consequently, for didactics. With her PhD under her belt, Prof. Dr Katrin Temmen worked as a senior engineer in the field of energy technology. After taking time off to raise a family, Katrin Temmen found her way to the field of technology didactics at Paderborn University. Didactics is the theory of learning and teaching. Technical didactics, therefore, deals with teaching and learning in technical disciplines and with researching various teaching techniques. The aim is to develop new teaching methods and improve existing ones. The Department of Technical Didactics at Paderborn University offers a course on structured learning and studying.
“Everyone’s just human. [So] just go your own way, without thinking that what others are doing is better,” is Ms Temmen’s advice to students.
