In the nineteenth episode of the electrical engineering podcast “Current Affairs,” Mesut Alptekin talks to our host, Tim Hetkämper, about the virtual electrical engineering laboratory.
Mesut Alptekin studied electrical engineering at Paderborn University. During his internship, he was struck by the fact that he had to operate equipment for experiments that he had never seen before. This gave Mesut Alptekin the idea for his research project: to develop an application that would make it much easier for students to get started with practical work in their electrical engineering studies. The results of his research led to the creation of an app for cell phones or tablets that allows users to place an oscillator, for example, in a room via the camera and then use it. The aim is to give every student the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the most basic equipment without incurring any purchase costs. In the course of new technologies, VR glasses were used and Mesut Alptekin was able to adapt the app to them.
He not only created and further developed this application, but also evaluated it through various tests and surveys. For example, how useful the mobile app is compared to a simple explanatory video, or how the gaze pattern of an experienced electrical engineer wearing VR glasses differs from that of a first-year student.
In the podcast, Mesut Alptekin talks about what he learned from this and what exciting research topics have emerged for the future based on his work.
