The Electrical Engineering Podcast "Current Affairs": Episode 17 - A year in Antarctica

 |  EI-Nachrichten

In the seventeenth episode of the Electrical Engineering podcast "Current Affairs", Karsten Böddeker talks to our host, Jan Beinfohr, about his year in Antarctica.

Karsten Böddeker spent a year in 2022 in one of the most remote places in the world: the Neumayer III station in Antarctica. One year is divided into the summer and winter seasons. The summer season refers to the Antarctic summer, which lasts around four months. During this time, there are around 50 people at the station. In winter, on the other hand, which takes up the remaining eight months of the year, there are only nine people at the research station. Together they keep it running. To make life there possible, care was taken to ensure that all the necessary skills were covered. In addition to the researchers (e.g. air chemist, geophysicist), there was also a cook, a doctor and Karsten Böddeker, an IT communications engineer. As such, he was responsible for repairing technical equipment, IT issues and for communicating with the world or with the arriving aircraft.
In the new podcast episode, he tells us all about what he experienced during his year, how he got this unusual job and how he was prepared for his time in Antarctica.
