In the thirteenth episode of the Electrical Engineering podcast "Current Affairs", Dr Jörg Schmalenströer and Dr Tobias Hemsel talk to our host, Olga Friesen, about the construction of the new Z-Building.
Dr Jörg Schmalenströer and Dr Tobias Hemsel are involved in the planning of the building as representatives of their subject areas in order to incorporate their interests and needs. Dr Jörg Schmalenströer represents the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Dr Tobias Hemsel the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
The new building is being constructed next to the Y building and will replace parts of the P building complex. Planning for the building has been underway for several years, with actual construction work starting at the beginning of 2025. This can be followed live via webcam. The new building will improve teaching and research work. For example, the new building will enable measurements to be taken during the day when it is in heavy use, as it will not vibrate or only vibrate slightly despite external influences. Another advantage is that the subject areas will be brought closer together in terms of space and closer dialogue will be possible. There will also be some improvements for students, for example new lecture theatres are planned. "We are replacing a building from the 1980s with a building from 2025!" replies Dr Jörg Schmalenströer when asked about the advantages of the new building.
Sustainability aspects were of course not neglected in the planning, so in addition to better insulation, the waste heat from the servers in the X building is to be used for heating and the laboratory space is to be designed variably. If necessary, these can therefore be easily reorganised without major construction work.
