Teach­ing award for PMI

At the Teaching Day on June 25, Tim Hetkämper and Lars Meihost were awarded the "Teaching Prize for Young Academics" for the course "Practical Course in Microcontrollers and Interface Electronics" (PMI).

The aim of the course for computer engineering students in their 3rd semester is to learn how to work with and program microcontrollers using hardware. In the first four weeks, the necessary basics are taught in lectures and deepened in small-step exercises. This is followed by a project phase in which three projects of increasing complexity are worked on one after the other.

Mr. Hetkämper and Mr. Meihost have replaced the outdated microcontroller platform with an up-to-date platform. Furthermore, a modular hardware concept was developed, which reduces the complexity of the previously used expansion module and thus makes it easier for students to understand.A switch to an operating system-independent open source toolchain ensures that there are no compatibility problems with the students' various operating systems.Future adaptations to more up-to-date hardware and variations in the tasks can be easily implemented as a result. 
All in all, this enables a sustainable continuation of the practical course. In addition to the redesign of the hardware, the lecture has also been revised and the colloquium redesigned to offer students a more pleasant atmosphere.
