Culture Fellow

Difficulties getting started? Disoriented? Perhaps you've asked yourself one of these questions at some point during the semester:

  • “How do I actually study properly for this exam?”
  • “Why do I understand the assignment completely differently to what the lecturer meant?”
  • “I'm confused about the tone or the way the subject is taught, am I in the wrong place?”

That’s exactly what we’re here for. These questions have nothing to do with your skills, but rather with the academic culture.
In the Department of Electrical Engineering, there are two Culture Fellows: one for German-language degree programs and one for international students. You’ll find the relevant contact forms at the very bottom of the page.

What does a Culture Fellow do?

Our positions were created by the university to support you. We support you in two key areas:

1. every study programme has its own peculiarities and unwritten laws (we call this disciplinary culture). We will help you with this:

  • Understand the expectations of the lecturers.
  • Find learning strategies that work specifically for electrical engineering.

2. if expectations are unclear or there are structural problems in teaching:

  • Gathering your feedback.
  • Identifying the obstacles together with you.
  • Seeking dialogue with the teaching staff for you to develop solutions

Why talk about "culture"?

Discussion helps with learning. Often, difficulties don’t stem from the material itself, but from different ways of working and expectations. When we talk about what’s confusing you or why a problem is phrased in a “strange” way, we untangle these issues. You’ll gain a better understanding of the subject and its way of thinking, which will ultimately make it easier for you to pass your exams.
