Side entry at vocational colleges
Would you like to become a teacher, but have studied engineering instead of teaching? Then you should check what opportunities are open to you to realise your dream job. The chances of being hired as a teacher at vocational colleges for industrial-technical specialisations are excellent!
If you have a degree in engineering from a university (Master's or Diploma), you have the opportunity to enter the teaching profession directly via a special lateral entry programme (OBAS) with part-time training (2 years). You will then teach 18 lessons per week and complete the pedagogical qualification at a Centre for Practical Teacher Training (ZfsL) one day a week. After successfully completing the state examination, you will have a fully-fledged teaching qualification and will generally be taken on by the training school.
If you have a degree in engineering from a university of applied sciences (Bachelor's, Master's or Diplom), you will need to complete a full teaching qualification for the teaching profession at vocational colleges at the university within 6 semesters in parallel with 13 hours of teaching per week. This is possible through a part-time Master of Education programme at Paderborn University and a subsequent part-time preparatory service (18 months) according to OBAS.
The prerequisite in each case is that a position open to lateral entrants is available at the desired vocational college.
The possibility of becoming a civil servant is given if the relevant requirements are met.

For applicants with a university degree who fulfil the admission requirements of § 2 OBAS (academic university degree with a standard period of study of at least 8 semesters and at least 2 years of professional activity after the university degree), this is the two-year part-time training course with subsequent state examination, which begins on 1 May and 1 November of each year. If it is not possible to provide evidence of at least two years of practical professional experience after graduation, this can be fulfilled in the teaching profession. In this case, applications are obliged to participate in the pedagogical introduction. Admission to the in-service training programme can then take place at the earliest two years after employment in the teaching profession.
For applications who do not take part in the OBAS in-service training programme, the "One-year pedagogical introduction to the teaching profession" (PE) is the mandatory qualification measure.
