The City of Paderborn
Paderborn was first mentioned in documents in 1222 and belongs to a number of historic cities located in the region of Westphalia or central Germany, respectively. With a population density of almost 150,000 inhabitants Paderborn officially ranks among the major German cities, yet still managing the balancing act between actively pulsating city-life and the rural atmosphere of the surrounding countryside. Since 1614 Paderborn has also been a university town and can therefore look back on a long academic tradition. Paderborn is particularly attractive for students because of its large offer of accommodation that you can chose from at affordable rents and its excellent public transport networks. Average rents are clearly below those in other German university towns (e.g. 50 % lower than in Aachen or Munich). The choice of activities in culture and leisure is manifold. Various museums as well as the historic inner city with its cathedral and adjacent monastery make Paderborn a cultural centre. Offering a wide range of sports-, leisure, and intensive training centres, Paderborn provides all kinds of training opportunities for sports enthusiasts. Note: Students changing their place of residence for studying reasons or when moving house within the Paderborn area must get registered at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt in German) in the town centre of Paderborn within 7 days upon relocation. Failing to register on time may result in a fine.

Wichtig: Für Studierende, die ihren Wohnsitz zwecks Studium nach Paderborn verlegen, besteht die Ummeldungspflicht beim Einwohneramt. Die An- bzw. Ummeldung des Wohnsitzes in Paderborn soll innerhalb einer Woche nach Umzug erfolgen. Bei verspäteter Meldung können Ordnungsgelder erhoben werden. Die Ummeldung ist beim Einwohneramt der Stadt Paderborn durchzuführen.
