Elec­tri­cal Sys­tems En­gi­nee­ring

If you are thinking about studying MS ESE at the University of Paderborn, you will need to fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Certificate of higher education entrance qualification (general or relevant subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification) or an equivalent foreign qualification.
  2. A University degree with the following requirements:
    • A first university degree obtained at a university within the jurisdiction of the German Basic Law with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters in electrical engineering or an equivalent foreign university degree.
    • The qualification has to contain the following areas with a minimum scope of:
      1. Advanced Mathematics at least 24 CP (Credit Points)
      2. Field Theory at least 5 CP
      3. Signal Theory at least 4 CP
      4. Systems Theory at least 4 CP
    • The qualification must be completed with a final grade of at least 2,5
  3. Sufficient English language skills. This can be proven by:
    • Bachelor's degree in an English-speaking country or in a domestic degree program accredited as English language program or
    • Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) “Internet-based” Test (iBT) with a score of at least 87 points or
    • TOEFL “Paper-based” Test (PBT) with a score of at least 585 points or
    • IELTS test with a score of at least 6.0 or
    • Cambridge Test: First (FCE) or equivalent examination results
  4. For foreign applicants, a GRE Revised General Test with at least 157 points in the “Quantitative Reasoning” section and at least 4.0 points in the “Analytical Writing” section. In the case of a very good or good final grade of the degree program, proof of the GRE Revised General Test is not required.

The examination board reserves the right to grant exceptions to the above prerequisites in individual applications.

Self-assessment

Before you apply, however, we recommend that you take the following two self-assessment tests in Signal Theory and Fields & Waves in order to determine for yourself whether you possess the necessary background knowledge for a successful completion of this degree program:

These tests should be taken without any aids. For the Signal Theory test, you should score at least 10 points out of 20 using the marking scheme shown on the test. For the Fields & Waves test, at least 75% of your answers should be correct. If you score less than that, you will probably not have the necessary background knowledge for a successful completion of this degree program.
