The LEA department engaged in the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Expo (ECCE Europe 2024) conference, taking place in Darmstadt in September. The formerly also as “EPE” known event is the largest European conference on Power Electronics and also this year, in its new format, counted 600+ international attendees characterizing it also as one of the most important symposia in this field worldwide.
The focus topics of this year’s conference included next to the latest advancements in Power Semiconductors, Power Converter Topologies, Power Converter Control and Design, Data Analysis, Converter’s Sustainability as well as the application areas of E-Mobility, Industrial Power Supplies, Renewable Energy Power Systems and Electrical Drives.
LEA presented latest research results in a lecture presentation of Roland Unruh.
Frank Schafmeister supported the conference as Session Co-Chair.
Roland Unruh received a special honor when being awarded for the best paper in the category Power Converter Topologies entitled “Experimentally Verified 22kW, 40kHz LLC Resonant Converter Design with new Control for a 1MW Cascaded H-Bridge Converter”.
The paper, co-authored by Joachim Böcker and Frank Schafmeister, presents the design of a 22kW LLC resonant converter for a single module of a 1MW cascaded H-bridge converter applied to supply a hydrogen electrolyzer. A new decentralized control method adjusts the reference output power of each LLC-converter based on its instantaneous DC-link voltage to compensate negative effects of the second harmonic DC-link voltage ripple. As a result, the overall system efficiency and robustness are increased without any additional hardware. A remarkable efficiency of 97.3% at full load is demonstrated.
This publication is based on research work in the context of the currently running DFG-project “Full Modular High-Current Variable-Voltage Rectifier Based on Simplified MMC-Topology with Resonant Conversion” (SCHA 2279/1-1).
We congratulate Roland Unruh and the team behind the project on this great success!
