Jahn Heymann, former doctoral student at the Department of Communications Engineering, will be awarded the prize of the VDE Northrhine-Westfalia (NRW) of the year 2022 for the best dissertation in the field of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. In his thesis with the title "Robust multi-channel speech recognition with neural network supported statistical beamforming" he had developed a novel beamforming technique, whereby the beamformer coefficients are determined with the help of time-frequency masks that are estimated by a neural network. This approach proved to be very successful, leading to top ranks in the international CHiME-3 and CHiME-4 challenges.
