Localization & Tracking
Our research activities in the area of "Localization & Tracking" include
- Acoustic speaker and sound event localization
- Sensor array geometry estimation
- Indoor navigation with WiFi-Signals
- Bluetooth-Low-Energy based localization and tracking
In the following a short overview about our recent activities in the different research topics is given.
Indoor Navigation
Project UniPIN
Since 2010 the Department of Communications Engineering (EIM-E/NT) of the University of Paderborn has invested remarkable efforts in creating an indoor navigation system for the university campus. In 2013 the project won one of the "University of Paderborn research prices". A team of researchers and students together developed the "UniPIN" system in this time, which was published in 2015. It is an indoor navigation app for Android Smartphones for the complete university campus including 25 buildings and more than 4334 rooms.
Bluetooth Low Energy Localization

Smartphones have become for many users a device which accompies them during the whole day. A consequence of this trend is the ubiquitous availability of Bluetooth and (with Standard 4.1) Bluetooth low energy. Bluetooth low energy devices are known for their inexpensive and energy preserving design (battery powered). Thus they are well-prepared for localization purposes.
